• Haridwar is one of the seven holiest places in India.
• Haridwar is the first city through which the sacred River Ganga flows.
• It is a very small city in the State of Uttrakhand, spread over an area of about 13 square kilometers and sited at an altitude of 314 m above the sea level and has a population of just over 2 lakh people.
• Haridwar is one of the oldest cities in India dating back to 1700 BC and has been mentioned in ancient scriptures with different names like Kapilsthan, Gangadwar and Mayapuri.
• Haridwar and Rishikesh are considered “Twin National heritage cities of India”.
• Devotees believe that they can fulfill their wishes if they pray with a clear heart at Mansa Devi Temple located on the hilltop in Haridwar.
• One of the most unique places to visit in the town of Haridwar is the Bharat Mata Mandir or the Mother India Temple. The Bharat Mata temple is a religious shrine, founded by Swami Satyamitranand Giri. Consisting of eight stories, the temple is a major attraction for travellers in Haridwar.
• Daksha Mahadev Temple is the temple where sage Daksha Mahadev had performed the infamous yajna in which Sati had self-immolated herself. The holy pyre, in which she sacrificed her life, still burns here.
• Har ki paudi is the entrance point of River Ganga. Here every evening devotees gather and offer their prayers to Ganga and light diyas and let them in to the river.
• There is a temple called Paradeshwar Mahadev temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The unique thing about this temple is, it has a Shiva linga which is made of mercury.
• At Haridwar one can also find an exact replica of Vaishno Devi Temple.
• It is an entry point for the famous Chaar Dhaam Yatra and devotees who undertake this Yatra are supposed to begin their journey from Haridwar.
• Divya Yog Mandir Trust University is situated in Haridwar and the main branch of Patanjali Yogpeeth of which Baba Ramdev is the head is also located here.
• Shanti Kunj is known worldwide for its research and development in herbal and Ayurvedic medicines. Here, a havan goes on continuously for world peace.
• Apart from spirituality, Haridwar is also famous for other adventurous activities such as trekking, bird-watching and river rafting and thousands of tourists flock this place every year.
• Rajaji National Park, which has a large population of wild elephants and tigers is also nearby to Haridwar.
• It is a meat free city because of the holy nature of the place.
• Street food of Haridwar is well renowned. Some of the famous food joints are Mohanji Puriwale who serve tasty aloo puri and Kashyap Kachoriwala who are famous for their Kachoris. It is also recommended to try the sweets at Mathura Walon Ki Prachin Dukaan where one can start with chaatpapdi and end with jalebi and badam milk. Their kulfi and faluda are also famous.
• It also has two famous markets; Moti Bazaar and Upper road Bazaar where vendors sell a variety of handicrafts, jewelry, clothes and food items. These two markets are very old and are adjacent to one another.
